welcome back to the newsroom where the news unfold live this saturday, august 27th. i m fredricka whitfield. we continue to watch hurricane irene and all that it is doing and wreaking havoc along the east coast. right now, live coverage from our affiliate out of norfolk, virginia, wavy, wayv vy as it i referred to. sure talking about a child that might be trapped. let s listen in. two people and their cat rescued after their boat was anchored and they got caught in some vicious water trying to escape hurricane irene. we understand they are okay. we also have many road closings. the hrbt is closed with the midtown tunnel and the chesapeake bay bridge tunnel. you look at the pictures and you can see why. this is a view from our vdot traffic cam, traffic jam cam, it shows virtually nobody on the road because conditions are getting progressively worse. we talked to melody woodrow a few minutes ago in hampton. melody had to move because the james she was stand on the james r
with respect to our own preparations, the federal government is leaning forward ahead of the storm. we have mobilized significant assets. the president has directed us to ensure that all needed resources are available and that we should coordinate closely with our state and local partners who are actually the first responders in this storm situation. we are doing just that. we have been, i have been in touch with the mayors and governors in the storm path. and we are also in touch with all of the first responders in the storm path along the east coast. fema has its national incident management assistance teams already located in a number of the states. so we won t have to wait for them to get there. they have been embedded over the last few days. and that will make sure that we are seamless in our response and recovery.
can and we will hope for the best as mom likes to say. we will be covering this very, very closely. as we always do at cnn. in fact, jim acosta takes over our coverage right now in the cnn newsroom. jim, take it away. thanks, guys, very much. good morning, everybody. it is almost here. hurricane irene is curving closer and closer to tens of millions of people. waves and wind already kicking up and the first rains will soak the southeast today. this is a big storm. hundreds of miles across and even from space, it is a monster. an astronaut on the international space station called the view terrifying. we have crews deployed up and down the east coast. reynolds wolf is in kill dils hill, north carolina and john zarrella is north of there. then candy crowley in long island and mary snow and jacqui jeras. reynolds, they are bracing for a direct hit, aren t they? they certainly are. one of the most troubling things about this err area is the how it s susceptible to the
