STONECREST, Ga. - Mayor Jason Lary is pushing back on allegations that he siphoned off some of the $6.2 million DeKalb County gave the city of Stonecrest from the CARES Act in late 2020. He insists the funds helped several businesses stay afloat in the COVID-19 pandemic. There was never an intent on anybody s part to kick back or filter money back or any of that nonsense. Being on cancer leave, I came in to shake hands with people who were often in tears saying you saved my business, you saved our church, Mayor Lary said during a news conference at Stonecrest City Hall. If along the way, something has happened that wasn t in line with the rules, I ll be the first to apologize for it. But the intent of it was good.

STONECREST, Ga. (AP) A state lawmaker is calling for Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to remove Stonecrest s mayor from office amid a report into the city s use of $6 million in COVID-19 relief funds.
Democratic Sen. Emanuel Jones, of Decatur, said he plans to provide the full investigative report to Kemp, the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice, which he previously asked to investigate how the money was spent, accusing Mayor Jason Lary of misusing the funds for his own personal gain, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
“There’s a whole bunch of money missing, and someone needs to be held accountable,” Jones said.

STONECREST, Ga. - The mayor of a DeKalb County city may be facing his third round of cancer since 2018.
At a two-day virtual retreat for the Stonecrest City Council over the weekend, City of Stonecrest Mayor Jason Lary said that he could be going in for a third cancer surgery in the upcoming months.
Lary said that he is seeking further treatments and other medical opinions and will know more this week.
The mayor was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018, successfully battling it with radiation treatment. During that time, officials say he never missed a day of work.
