The Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) Board of Trustees has come under fire after a report from a San Joaquin County civil grand jury cites a failure in leadership.  The San Joaquin County grand jury released a 33-page report which they title as “Dissension, Dismay, and Disarray.” The report highlights how the board s poor leadership resulted in a high turnover rate for school superintendents and the board s lacks transparency.  “Before the open session meeting to hire the board attorney on February 24, 2020, the Stockton Unified School District Board of Trustees did not make the contract available to the 16 public and the minority-voting trustees. Grand Jury finds Stockton Unified trustees failed as district leaders

A San Joaquin County civil grand jury has found the Stockton Unified School District Board of Trustees have failed as district leaders and will likely continue to do so.  A scathing 33-page report released by the 2020-21 grand jury says Stockton Unified trustees are the direct reason for what s been called the district s revolving door of superintendents. Stockton Unified has had 14 interim and permanent superintendents in just over 30 years, several of which in recent years have left before fulfilling their contracts. The report shows that nearly all assumed the superintendent role from 2005 to 2021, with only six having been permanent and average tenure lasting about 19 months. The district has changed leadership three times in the past year alone.

Stockton Unified scheduled to send 104 layoff staff notices by Monday

The Stockton Unified School District’s Board met for their routinely scheduled meeting. What was not part of their usual routine was the discussion to layoff 104 staff members.  Resolution 20-50 was included in the agenda for the board’s meeting on March 9. With a vote of 5-2, the resolution passed resulting in 104 people potentially losing their jobs in the district for the 2021-22 school year. Layoff notices are scheduled to be sent by March 15.   “I don’t know how we came so far away from the direction that we’d [the board] given the superintendent,” said area seven board trustee Candelaria Vargas before the meeting.
