More than a million children around the world may have been orphaned by the COVID-19 pandemic, study finds Adrianna Rodriguez, USA TODAY Replay Video A recent study reveals another devastating impact the coronavirus pandemic has had on children around the world. Researchers at Boston Children’s Hospital estimate more than a million children may have been orphaned because of a COVID-19-related death, according to their model published Tuesday in The Lancet. They defined orphaned as losing at least one parent. The authors estimate 1.13 million children lost a parent or custodial grandparent, and of these, 1.04 million lost a mother, father, or both. Overall, 1.56 million children were estimated to have experienced the death of at least one parent or a custodial grandparent, or other grandparent living with them.

As part of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act signed into law by President Biden back in March, the IRS is preparing to launch the portal for the $3,000 child tax credit. “We will launch by July 1 with the absolute best product we are able to put together,” said commissioner Charles Rettig on Tuesday during a hearing with the Senate Finance Committee.  Per the new law, families with children ages 6 to 17 will receive an annual benefit of $3,000 for each child and $3,600 per child under the age of 6 for the 2021 tax year.
