ukraine isn t really using the fighter jets that they have in dogfights in the sky against russian pilots. what they re doing very effectively is from the ground, which is they ve got stinger anti-aircraft missiles which they re using to bring down russian planes, and the u.s. is much focused on giving them more of that, the javelins, the anti-tank missiles. they think going with the migs at this point would be too provak tich and could take this one of the things that the obama administration has been trying not to do is to escalate this further with russia. they think that might be a red line for putin, which could up what he does in response. so that is the pentagon line right now. obviously, megan, the talks continue, but they didn t seem to amount to anything this morning. the times says the new york times says there has been
response to the millions of ukrainians fleeing the war. this humanitarian crisis, really an unprecedented one in the scope and scale and speed that we ve seen this. we re going to monitor this and bring you any updates as they come in. ukraine is asking the united states for two types of weapons right now. stinger anti-aircraft missiles and javelin anti-tank missiles. ukrainians say they need 500 of each every day to combat russia. ukraine said this is what it needs to take on russian forces one month into this war. joining me right now for more on this, cnn military analyst, general general, ukrainians are asking for 500 of these every day. what does that request tell you? well, they are on the offensive. so what they are doing is they are working as much as they can. they are moving out. they are in fixed positions around kyiv and in some of the
ukraine itself. 60 million rounds of ammunition, 25,000 helmets, javelin missiles, stinger anti-aircraft, humvees, a panoply of military assets. how is that going of not only promising it, but delivering it. the pentagon was on the defense on this earlier saying they were moving very quickly, as soon as that, $800 million was signed by the president. they had equipment moving within four days. very key to it, two items on there, the stinger anti-air missiles and javelin anti-tank missiles. but what is not on the list still, no fighter jets for ukraine. the u.s. will not be providing those. if some of the allies in europe want to do it, well, that s up to them, according to u.s. military policy right now. and none of the longer range air defense systems. they are called the s-300. if you start hearing about that, the s-300 is a russian system that many nato allies in eastern europe have. the ukrainians want it. greater range, greater distance,
