carol, it s just starting to rain yet again. it s so hard to wrap your hand around. i was struck by what the governor said. there s not a stick standing anywhere in that square mile. how hard has it been for rescue crews to comb through the thick mud? reporter: tremendously hard. there s so many obstacles and dangers. the ground is not stable. there are those risks involved in fact search and rescue teams had to retreat yesterday for a few hours which is precious time lost because it was too dangerous to get in there. we heard they re encountering mud packed homes and cars so thick it s like picking through concrete in some areas. yet other areas where the mud or loose debris is so porous that they sink into it. some crews had to be pulled out of the muddy debris using ropes because they were stuck up to

against the clock after deadly mud slides. the death toll is up to 8. sadly, crews are saying it s growing more unlikely that survivors will be found. more than a dozen people are missing. mud slides took out dozens of homes and blocked the highway with 20 feet of mud. state officials are still coming to grips with what they ve seen. the devastation is just unrelenting and awesome. there really is no stick standing in the path of the slide. and this is before and after. just take a look at this photo giving the idea about the impact of this mud slide. authorities think that heavy rainfall made the ground unstable. and another recovery operation is underway in texas as crews try to clean up a major oil spill in galveston bay. the huge shipping channel is shut down and dozens of boats have nowhere to go. close to 170,000 gallons of oil leaked after a cargo ship collided with a barge on saturday. the barge was carrying nearly 1 million gallons of fuel.
