MUNISING – Daniel Fortin, son of Bonita Croschere and the late Terrance Fortin, Stevens Lake area, Wetmore, has enlisted in the Michigan Army National Guard. Fortin is assigned to the 117st Quartermaster Company in Munising. He will leave March 20 for eight weeks of basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. After he’s graduated from basic training, he’ll attend nine weeks of advanced technical training at Fort Lee, VA. as a petroleum supply specialist. Fortin is a 1984 graduate from Eben High School (now Superior Central) and is employed at Superior Shores Nursing Center in Munising.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Water and Climate Center’s snow pack report, the Wolf Creek summit, at 11,000 feet of elevation, had 13.1 inches of snow water equivalent as of 1:15 p.m. on Dec. 23.
The median snow water equivalent amount for that date was 13 inches.
While the amount of 13.1 inches of snow water equivalent is 101 percent of the Dec. 23 median for Wolf Creek summit, the entire basin, including the San Miguel, Dolores, Animas and San Juan River basins, were at 72 percent of the Dec. 23 median in terms of snowpack.
Last week’s reading showed that the Wolf Creek summit had 12.7 inches of snow water equivalent.

Search continues for pilot of Madison-based F-16 jet that crashed in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula [The Wisconsin State Journal]
Dec. 9 The search continued Wednesday for a pilot of an F-16 Fighting Falcon jet based in Madison that crashed Tuesday night in the wilderness of Michigan’sUpper Peninsula during a scheduled training exercise.
It was not known if the pilot, with the Wisconsin Air National Guard’s 115th Fighter Wing at Truax Field, ejected from the aircraft just prior to it crashing about 15 miles northwest of Manistique, Michigan, and 250 miles from Madison.
“The status of the pilot is still unknown,” Capt. Leslie Westmont, of the state Department of Military Affairs told the Wisconsin State Journal Wednesday. “We don’t have any information on that right now.”
