EDWARDSVILLE A new Cross-River Crime Task Force to has been created to sustain a countywide focus on crime flowing across the Mississippi River into Madison County.
The group’s first meeting is scheduled for Friday, April 9 and includes Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly, Madison County Sheriff John Lakin, Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine, U.S. Marshal Brad Maxwell, U.S. Attorney Steven Weinhoeft, police chiefs from multiple Madison County communities and regional agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigations, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms.

Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Haine formed a new Cross-River Crime Task Force in response to crime flowing from across the river into Madison County.
The task force was created to “sustain a county-wide focus” on the crime coming from Missouri, according to a press release.
The task force is comprised of law enforcement officials from the federal, state and local levels who work together to stop individuals from using the interstate highways and bridges to cross state lines and commit crimes in Madison County.
The task force’s mission is to combine the efforts of the different law enforcement agencies to protect Madison County communities and bring criminals to justice, the press release states.

COLUMBIA, Ill. Columbia, Illinois, Mayor Kevin Hutchinson resigned Monday, less than a week after he was indicted.
“It is with a heavy heart, but due to the recent events, I feel it is in the best interest of the City and my family for me to immediately resign my position as Mayor,” Hutchinson said in a news release.
Hutchinson has been the mayor of Columbia since 2005. He did not run for re-election in 2020, and his fourth term in office is set to expire on April 30. The news release said the city council is expected to hold a special meeting this week to elect an acting mayor from its ranks.

R&W Builders agreed to pay the $400,000 in a civil settlement to resolve allegations that it violated the False Claims Act, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Stump. The allegations against R&W were raised during a federal investigation and no criminal complaint was filed. R&W Builders owner and President Jill Rutter said she cannot comment on the investigation or settlement.
