During Black History Month each year we recognize leaders who have pushed the struggle forward with events, memorials and educationals. Many of those we celebrate believed in and fought for revolutionary change.
Prior to the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, the Union was losing the Civil War. But that summer, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War the Siege of Port Hudson, in which more than 15,000 perished just north of Baton Rouge resulted in a turning point for the North by blocking supplies and support from the richest state of the Confederacy, Texas. In this siege lasting 48 days, a great hero, Andre Caillioux, the first Black officer of the Union army, was killed on the seventh day of the battle. His body lay on the ground for 41 days.

A peculiar, eight-foot-by-eight-foot wooden box, with an equally peculiar name, has appeared inside the sleek, minimalist tasting room of Rex Hill Winery in Newberg.
It’s the Goose Cube – a mobile art installation that creator Steven Ochs calls a “distributed model museum.”
The outside of the cube is a work of art created by Portland letterpress studio Neu Haus Press. But there’s more. Paying customers scan a QR code, which opens a hidden door on the cube. Patrons can step inside and find themselves surrounded by mirrored walls.

Nicholas Ochs, formerly of Huntington County, is in custody with the Federal Bureau of Investigation due to involvement in the riot that occurred at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, Jan. 6.
Ochs, who currently resides in Hawaii, has been arrested for violating Title 18 of the United States Code, “Unlawful Entry into Restricted Buildings or Grounds.” According to the Cornell Law School website, 18 U.S. Code 1752 (a) states several instances in which the code may be broken.
Ochs took to his Twitter feed to post a photo of himself after breaching the Capitol building. The social media post was captioned “Hello from the capitol lol.”
