Napa County takes deeper look at cell towers, early fire warning towers

Napa County plans big push this year to repair local roads

Napa County is embarking on a $25 million road-fixing push in the unincorporated areas outside of cities during 2021 that is unprecedented in recent memory. “Roughly double as compared to 2020, and that was a bigger year than any previous,” Public Works Director Steven Lederer said. Some of the projects will be on widely traveled roads, such as Silverado Trail. Many will be off-the-beaten track, amid the forests of Mount Veeder, the chaparral of Soda Canyon and the vineyards and rural homes of Coombsville. Napa County to save an historic stone bridge, while another will be replaced

One of Napa County’s prized stone bridges with extensive damage will be spared the wrecking ball, while another — one long ago altered beyond recognition — will be torn down to help fish. The county will remain a California hot spot for 1900s-era masonry arch bridges with about two dozen on public roads. More than a century ago, wine country was known as “The County of Stone Bridges.” Now comes this latest tale of two bridges. For the Greenwood Avenue bridge over Garnett Creek near Calistoga, the story is one of impending rebirth. This 1904 bridge with a single, 32-foot-long span is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Napa County weighs using artificial intelligence-based fire detection system

Napa County might use a high-tech system to try to detect fires soon after ignition, with the hope an early warning gives firefighters the jump they need to prevent raging, massive wildfires. Ten or so poles topped with the artificial intelligence-based IQ FireWatch fire-sensing technology could provide coverage for 94% to 97% of the county, county officials said. The system can detect heat disturbance from fires even before smoke is visible. The concept is that it’s about as early detection as you can get,” county Public Works Director Steven Lederer said.
