Wild wild woods give children survival skills

CHILDREN are being taught outdoor skills in the newly developed Wild wild woods . Lower Darwen Primary School have developed the outdoor space which is located on the school grounds to promote survival skills as well as improving outdoor education. Headteacher Steven Cumbo said: With kids being inside because of lockdown, certainly with the extra restrictions we have had in Blackburn, the opportunity for the kids to get outside is quite limited. Even within school because we have such a tight timetable at the moment, we have to organise time slots for each bubble to go outside and get some fresh air.

Mental health dog helps pupils during pandemic

A SCHOOL has employed a dog to help with pupils mental health during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lower Darwen Primary School have brought in Bailey, a yellow Labrador who has been going round classrooms meeting the pupils in the school. Natasha Sweeney, the wellbeing co-ordinator for the school organised the scheme and Baily will start his work officially in January. Headteacher Steven Cumbo said: The kids have come back and I think they are just really happy to be back at school. We did a lot of fundraising for Bailey before Covid-19 and then when the school closed, the idea of having an assistance dog in school became even more of a good idea.
