The Lake Placid-North Elba Joint Review Board is expected to vote next week on whether to approve local developer Joseph Barile’s plans to build The Peaks at Lake Placid, a 355-unit housing complex at the former W. Alton Jones Cell Science Center property on Barn Road.

To the editor: Per your editorial in Saturday’s paper headlined “New housing is good, but what about what’s needed most?” please note the following comments. The Fawn Valley development planned for Wesvalley Road offers ownership possibilities for those who serve the community of Lake Placid. It will be an attractive neighborhood built in a beautiful setting. Many teachers, nurses, police officers, firefighters, town workers and others essential to the core of our village and town who have been priced out of town deserve to be able to live here and own their own homes. The two-bedroom condos and Cape Cod homes will be under $200,000. They will be offered to those who help provide Lake Placid with the excellent quality of life we enjoy and have incomes of up to 200% area median income. Three of the condos will be sold to families with incomes of 80% or less AMI. It can be noted that with today’s mortgage rates, even the more expensive homes in this development will qual

LAKE PLACID The Joint Review Board has set a public hearing next month on a new housing development off of Wesvalley Road, one of three housing developments now in the works in Lake Placid. This new 22-unit development, called Fawn Valley, is being undertaken by the Homestead Development Corporation. The HDC is an organization led by local construction manager Steve Sama, North Elba town Councilwoman Emily Politi, Realtor Whit Bissell, former Lake Placid mayor and current mayoral candidate Jamie Rogers, and accountant John Huttlinger Jr. It’s one of three housing developments currently in the works in Lake Placid, and the second planned for Wesvalley Road.
