what were you thinking, mike? i was thinking beebee went to high school in philadelphia. did he really? lived and went to high school in philadelphia. he and grace kelly. yeah. lived and worked and went to college in boston for several years. and you could really, as steve pointed out, you could really, really see yesterday that he has a sense of what this country is all about. this country is about fairness. and the key point that he made over and over yesterday among several key points is one that the president, i think, failed to articulate enough in his address, and it is this. until israel is recognized and allowed the right to exist verbally by its fatah and hamas, there s no point in having negotiations. and willie, we talked about how diplomats and other people that really know the middle east came on here and said what the president said wasn t that earth shattering. right. but, again, we ve been talking about the political
to their destruction which is a no go. that was lost in the coverage. and, again, a lot of people on the left and also a lot of people in the middle that are jumping up and down saying, well, george bush and bill clinton believe the same thing. and george bush came close to saying the same thing in 2008. and yet the white house itself knew that they were pushing the envelope diplomatically that when you say and, again, you have to really understand this, steve. as i know you do. but 1967, you have to understand that that rings a bell. yeah. i say you, i mean the american people need to understand for the israelis, if you talk about 1949 borders and variations, that s one thing. if you say this negotiation needs to start with pre-1967 borders, it s fraught with a lot of imagery. imagery and substance.
implications. it s hard to explain if you re a diplomat to the american people and especially the israeli people why it is that you re pushing further toward israel when the people on the other side will call osama bin laden a hero but still have in their charter that they re going to hunt down and kill every israeli they can find. you can almost hear netanyahu in that speech where he received a rousing ovation. more ovations than the president in the state of the union. you can almost hear him say let me put this in terms that americans can understand. you re asking us to sit down and negotiate with the equivalent of al qaeda, which is hamas. he made the parallel, of a state whose charter says we should not exist and we will work to the destruction of our nation, of our country. so why exactly would you, as americans, sit down with a group backed by al qaeda? you would never even consider it, so why are you asking us to do it? steve, of course, so that s the political side of
