Stakeholders Recommend Varied Sources Of Funding For Free SHS, Pre-Tertiary Education

  Dr Steve Manteaw, the Co-Chair of the Ghana Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative, has asked the government not to overly depend on natural resource revenue as a source of funding education. He said the government needed to redirect its attention to other sectors for funds to sustain the free Senior High School (SHS) policy. He said over-reliance on natural resource revenues, especially petroleum funds, could be risky on account of the volatile nature of commodity prices. The mining sector, he explained, had some potentials to contribute to secondary education financing and advised that corporate social responsibility spending be re-directed to education.

  Co-chairman for Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), Dr Steve Manteaw says Ghana cannot blame its failure to exploit its minerals on foreign companies engaging in mining and oil business in the country. According to him, many countries with oil in commercial quantities including Ghana set up their own companies immediately after discovering oil in the country in order not to leave the oil exploration business to foreign companies alone. Speaking on Okay FM’s  Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, Dr Steve Manteaw indicated that many of those countries with oil in commercial quantities have been successful due to the fact that they took charged of the oil business and contracted foreign companies to do the most difficult part of the work and pay them off.

  Dr Steve Manteaw, the Co-chairman of Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI) has said all the loans the country has been going for especially under the Akufo-Addo led NPP government have become a very lucrative business in the country. According to the former Chairman of PIAC, some people in the country are benefitting from the loans that the country has been going for as every loan comes with a commission for the transaction advisors. Speaking on Okay FM’s  Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, Dr Steve Manteaw asked why the country is busily going for loans when the ruling New Patriotic Party while in opposition said that the country has enough money for development.

Supposed Public Forum On The Monetization of Minerals Royalties Is

  Co-chairman for Ghana Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (GHEITI), Dr Emmanuel Steve Asare Manteaw has described as bogus the public forum organised by the Minerals Incomes Investment Fund to explore the concept and best practices of monetizing minerals royalties. According to him, the public forum does not constitute proper consultation as the government should have first come out with the amendment in the Agyapa deal after President Akufo-Addo directed the Finance Minister and the Attorney-General to correct the concerns raised by the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, Dr Steve Manteaw was of the view that the President should have made public the changes done in the Agyapa deal as raised by the Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and then call for public discussion on those changes before any public forum to explore the concept and best practices of monetizing minerals royalties.
