For the past year, Lenawee County superintendents have been leading their respective districts through the worst educational dilemma of their careers, often without much guidance from our state officials. However, they have persevered, they have met the challenge head on and they have provided the best educational opportunities for their students. Their demonstrated governance is an example of the superior educational leadership we have in Lenawee County.
This year, Lenawee County schools will be losing another great educator. Steve Laundra will be stepping down in June after 40 years with Sand Creek Community Schools. Mr. Laundra’s departure puts into focus the reality that Lenawee County has been fortunate to have consistent, effective leadership.

SAND CREEK Steve Laundra was sure he was going to get hired by Pepsi coming out of college.
Then a small school called him about a business teacher gig. Laundra hadn t heard of Sand Creek, but his roommate from Adrian knew of the rural school. He drove Laundra to the interview.
Laundra would accept the teaching job but thought to himself, I won t be here for very long.
That was 40 years ago.
The son of two teachers worked his way up from teacher to athletic director to assistant principal to high school principal and finally superintendent, often times holding two positions at one time.
January is School Board Recognition Month. This is a time to recognize the individuals who approach their volunteer work like it is a full-time job and with extraordinary dedication to public schools. They are citizens whose decisions affect our children and build our community.In a year full of challenges for public education not seen in recent history, school board members persevered through the adversity of 2020 to provide the best possible education for our students.
