The iwi, Ngāti Pāoa, has been worried for years about declining inshore biodiversity on the Hauraki Gulf s most populated island. And with community support, a restriction is being imposed from this weekend. Advertisement Ngāti Pāoa kaumātua and tohunga were to lead a dawn ceremony on Sunday morning, to place a rāhui on the waters surrounding the island.

A group representing the commercial fishing industry says it s not excusable some skippers are fishing in protected areas. It comes as data obtained under the Official Information Act shows the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) is investigating a set netting vessel in the South Island. It alleges it fished in both a dolphin-protected area and a marine reserve. Seafood NZ says it s working on a solution to ensure companies know the rules about not fishing in these protected areas.

There s been a 10-fold increase in detected offences since commercial fishing vessels were required to give geospatial tracking information to the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI). Data released to Newshub shows these offences include fishing in marine reserves, not having an observer, and submitting catch data too late.  MPI s digital tracking system monitors the movements of commercial vessels across New Zealand. It s all about behavioural change and this is a game-changer for us. Our compliance activity is far more directed now, MPI compliance investigations manager Steve Ham says.
