GREENFIELD Several residents appeared before the City Council Wednesday night to speak to the citizens initiative process outlined in the city charter, objecting to the Appointments and Ordinances Committee’s vote last month to recommend no changes.
Despite pandemic setbacks and funding obstacles, a grocery store will be opening later this week in Downtown Port Huron. Steve Fernandez of Country Style Marketplace says the doors to their new location at the corner of Huron and Grand River Avenues will open to the public at 11am Friday. Speaking to WPHM, Fernandez described the occasion as a "soft opening" and asked for the public's patience as they continue to add inventory and train their staff. "We just need to get a basic grocery store open and going. We will focus on more of the (hot food) items as we get further down the road, like in April and May," said Fernandez. He plans to offer prepared meals for take out for both lunch and dinner. A grand opening for the store is being planned for early April. The new location will include many of the same products and brands available at their Fort Gratiot location including a produce section, deli counter, and meat counter. The owners of Country Style Marketplace say they are navigating pandemic fueled supply shortages and inflation as they work to open their new downtown Port Huron location. Originally planned to open late fall - and later delayed until this month - owner Steve Fernandez asks for the public's patience as they work diligently to put the equipment and staffing in place in order to get the store open. "We were at the mercy of several things that really we had zero control over, obviously a pandemic is not the time to start a major project like this," Fernandez told WPHM. He says some materials are in short supply and others are much more expensive than they once were. "In some cases (material prices) are 150% more than the exact same item three years ago." Fernandez says if all goes as plan, there could be a soft open next month for the downtown location, with a grand opening sometime this spring.
