McMurry sets summer theater season and 2021-22 lineup

Coming out of great unknown this time last year, when COVID-19 held a deadly grip on the nation, McMurry University found a way to bring back live theater. Kerry Goff, the theater department head, had to revise his three-show summer schedule due largely to getting the rights to shows, but he came up with a Plan B. He would take two shows, Steel Magnolias and The Fantasticks, outdoors. Yes, into the summer heat. The shows were performed on an elevated stage at the university s Quad. Actors were spread across the stage and did not physically interact. Audiences were limited in number and seated apart, usually under the nearest tree. That alone encouraged social distancing.

What the Abilene Reporter-News liked and disliked: We curd it right

1. Say Cheese! It was announced Friday that Great Lakes Cheese is coming our way, bringing more than 500 jobs and a local investment shy of $200 million with its packaging and distribution facility. Local leaders lined up to break the news, that actually came first virtually from Austin and Gov. Greg Abbott, with state Rep. Stan Lambert at his left and state Sen. Dawn Buckingham at his right. Hints of a big announcement started in the fall. As Abilene emerges from the economic challenges of the pandemic, this is great news in moving forward. One more thing - Abbott promised to attend the ribbon-cutting event and wear a cheesehead. With a governor s race coming in 2022, that will a great photo op.

Ready, set, go full tilt! As pandemic wanes, busyness returns

Ready, set, go full tilt! As pandemic wanes, busyness returns Our view Except the year it hailed. But Sunday looks to be the calm day we generally expect.  Enjoy, because when the bunny is gone, the busyness hops in. If you remember this moment a year ago, there was nothing going on in Abilene. It wasn t calm. It was empty. Empty parking lots. Empty entertainment venues. Empty school yards. That continued as the pandemic intensified in Abilene, Taylor County and West Texas. There was little to do, and after that settled in, we considered that perhaps we normallh have too much to do.
