We started this discussion back in january. When partisanship about here without a fever pitch, the toxic environment was absolutely now conducive to things that need to be done. But for those that may not remember we were in the middle of the heat of the day over Voting Rights, with both sides democrats and republican will equally vote again and their positions and its kinda hard to move people off of that preventive action of january the sixth and the situation that has been going on since 1887 issued been corrected and i had not been but no onewo ever felt we d what we had so now we have to take care of it. Everyone stepser into play. By january the 19th, my democratic colleagues were so frustrated that they forced a vote on repealing the filibuster to allow that bill the pass with a simple majority along partyar lines. This Virginia Bar Association event is about 90 minutes. [applause] think you so much. I want to thank steve bush, Paul Atkinson for their exceptional work for the work they did to get this program together. The events of january 6 are feared in our memories. I use that firm appropriately. The only connection, the only other example i can think of is 9 11. I think in each instance we actually saw this in real time, almost as if we were there. But we have to get past those images and we have to ask ourselves why did it occur . Who or what is responsible, and perhaps most importantly for our discussion today, how do we prevent it from happening again . That is why this panel and these four individuals are so extraordinary so we can hear them altogether. We will spend the better part of an hour with each one of them giving us their thoughts and perhaps i will have a followup question or two. Then we will do the audience questions. The finance Committee Meets this morning to discuss how this hearing comes at a time when americans are getting clobbered by climbing rent and home prices, key drivers of inflation. Data released last week shows rent increased in june at the fastest rate since 1986. Buying a home is getting more expensive. Many people that have modest incomes for big Student Loan Debt feel like the dream of homeownership has slipped out of the reach. The root causes the United States isnt building enough housing. The shortage is affecting citizens and cities all over america. For example, my hometown of portland the skyrocketing rent and of low supplies is also an issue in the central oregon, Southern Oregon and Eastern Oregon where they cant build enough housing fast enough to keep up with demand.
