Energy storage expert, Sterling PlanB has signed an agreement with NYK Trading Corporation, the trading company of the NYK Group, to distribute Sterling PlanB’s energy storage systems in Japan. Sterling PlanB has pioneered the development of energy storage systems (ESS) for use in the maritime industry, and consistently raised performance and safety standards for battery technology.

Sterling PlanB Completes A60 Fire Testing – Marine Energy Storage System Survives 950°C Temperatures
Sterling PlanB has now conclusively demonstrated that direct exposure of its battery module to a 950°C fire can be successfully managed by its unique thermal management system – passing the A60 fire survivability test thanks to the effectiveness of its unique liquid cooling system.
The A60 test examines risks such as a fire in the machinery space adjacent to the lithium energy storage system, and the potential for a battery to contribute its considerable energy to the intensity of an existing fire. If a generator fails and causes a fire, for example, a nearby battery could go into thermal runaway due to the extremely high temperatures that would surround it, increasing the intensity of the fire and posing an explosion risk.
MHO-Co to head consortium to develop green solutions for shipping; fuel cells and batteries
Denmark-based shipping company MHO-Co is heading a consortium that will spend €4.5 million during the next three years on developing green solutions for the future of the maritime industry. Together with Aalborg University, among others, and with grants from the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP), MHO-Co will test fuel cells and new battery technology on the shipping company s advanced hybrid vessels.
The Danish shipping company is the initiator of the consortium which, with the companies Danfoss, Ballard Power Systems Europe A/S, Sterling PlanB and Stuart Friezer Marine, also consists of research engineers from Aalborg University. Of the €4.5 million, €2.15 million comes from grants from the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP).
