Pfizer data suggests COVID-19 shot protects against SA variant

Pfizer Inc and BioNTech said new clinical trial data signalled that their COVID-19 vaccine could protect against the new coronavirus variant first discovered in South Africa. The shot was 100 percent effective in preventing illness among trial participants in South Africa, where the new B1351 coronavirus variant is dominant, the companies said. The South Africa trial was relatively small, with 800 participants. Pfizer said the rate was derived from a relatively small number of nine infections observed, all in the placebo group. Separately, the companies said their vaccine is approximately 91 percent effective at preventing COVID-19, citing updated trial data that included participants inoculated for up to six months.

Bulgaria latest to halt AstraZeneca vaccine; WHO says no need

Bulgaria has stopped using the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, joining a small number of European countries that have halted its use after reports that some recipients developed serious blood clots. Fears over the safety of the vaccine rose on Sunday when Austria announced it had stopped using a batch of AstraZeneca shots while investigating one person’s death from coagulation disorders, and another’s illness from a pulmonary embolism. Concerns mounted on Thursday when Denmark, Norway and Iceland said they were also suspending the use of the vaccine, jointly produced with the University of Oxford. Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borissov said in a statement on Friday that the use of the vaccine would be paused “until all doubts are dispelled and as long as the experts do not give guarantees that it does not pose a risk to the people”.
