MTSU names 2022-23 Distinguished, Young Alumni, True Blue Citations of Distinction honorees

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee State University is again recognizing outstanding alumni who represent excellence and distinction through their professional careers, loyal support and service to the broader community.  From 1960 to present, the MTSU Alumni Association has recognized accomplished alumni with the association’s highest honor: the Distinguished Alumni Award.  This year’s recipient is Katie Vance (Class of 2005) .

Army Reserve Gets First Cyber General The United States Army has promoted the first Army Reserve cyber officer to the rank of brigadier general. Colonel Robert Powell Jr. was promoted in a December ceremony held at Signal Theater at Fort Gordon in Georgia. Having pinned the one-star rank to his Army Green Service Uniform, Powell will serve as the deputy commanding general of the 335th Signal Command (Theater). Powell was born in Tennessee and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1991. He was commissioned through the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) and started his military career as an armor officer with the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

Robert Powell Jr. (AUGUSTA GA)  An MTSU ROTC alumnus has become the U.S. Army Reserve’s first cyber officer to be promoted to brigadier general. Robert Powell Jr., who graduated from MTSU’s College of Liberal Arts with a bachelor’s degree in international relations in 1991, was promoted from colonel to the one-star rank of brigadier general during a ceremony on Dec. 15 at Fort Gordon, Georgia. With the promotion, Powell will serve as the deputy commanding general, cyber, of the 335th Signal Command (Theater). He commanded the Army Reserve’s Cyber Protection Brigade from 2016 to 2019.

Robert Powell Jr. pinned the one-star rank to his Army Green Service Uniform’s shoulders during a small ceremony at the U.S. Army Signal Corps home. Powell will serve as the deputy commanding general, cyber, with the 335th Signal Command (Theater). He commanded the U.S. Army Reserve Cyber Protection Brigade from 2016 to 2019. He recently mobilized to support the Cyber National Mission Force, U.S. Cyber Command at Fort Meade, Maryland. A Tennessean, Powell graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1991 and commissioned through ROTC. He started his Army career as an Armor officer with the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas, and joined the Army Reserve in 2004 as a military intelligence officer.
