Longtime United Helpers CEO retiring

OGDENSBURG — United Helpers Chief Executive Officer Stephen E. Knight will retire from the nonprofit at the end of May. Mr. Knight’s career with United Helpers began in August 1988 when he was hired as an assistant administrator for what was then known as United Helpers Care, Inc. Today, that portion of the company is known as United Helpers Behavioral Health and Life Skills. After spending two years as assistant administrator, Mr. Knight, who grew up in Lisbon and graduated from St. Lawrence University, was promoted to administrator in 1990. He was named director of systems development in 1996. In 2001, Mr. Knight was promoted to director of operations before becoming the company’s third CEO in 2009.

No new COVID deaths, four recoveries reported Friday at Ogdensburg nursing home

OSWEGATCHIE — With the first round of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines expected to arrive Jan. 5, the Ogdensburg Rehabilitation and Senior Care facility is approaching 200 total cases of COVID-19 as the nursing home enters its fourth week of dealing with a coronavirus outbreak. Of the nearly 150 total people who resided at the Ogdensburg site in late November, 124 residents — more than 80% — have tested positive for the novel coronavirus since the outbreak began the weekend before Thanksgiving. As of Friday morning, 17 residents who tested positive for the virus have died. The site is now home to 121 residents, a figure that has dropped steadily following the almost daily death of a resident since the first fatality was reported on Thanksgiving.

Thursday, December 17, 2020 - 5:28 pm OGDENSBURG – The chief operating officer of United Helpers is thanking local residents, businesses and community organizations for their recent support during the COVID-19 outbreak at its facilities. The organization recently issued a call for support in the wake of a massive outbreak of the COVID-19 that has resulted in 14 deaths. The call sought help for personal protective equipment, staff assistance and donations of meals for employees who have been working extra hours. “We have always appreciated the support of our friends and neighbors from across the North Country, but what we’ve witnessed over the past few weeks is really quite difficult to put into words,” United Helpers CEO Stephen E. Knight. Knight said. “Words can never accurately portray the amount of gratitude we have for each and every one who has offered assistance to us during this time.”
