Drivers using their mobile phone are the target of a new police clampdown in Cumbria. In February, officers throughout the county will be cracking down on those using their devices while behind the wheel as part of the a National Police Chiefs Operation. Motorists face penalty points and fines if caught using a handheld phone while driving – and collecting just six points in the first two years after passing a driving test will result in the loss of a licence. Inspector Stephen Vickers from the mobile support group said: “We see the devastating effects of those that have been distracted while driving, whether that be by a mobile or other device.
