guest: then you have duboise, and yet duboise wasn t done yet. he had a conflict with marcus garvey, a young jamaican who had come to the united states, founded something called the black star line. you ll recall, of course, the white star line was home of the titanic and those ships. garvey wanted to have a fleet, and he wanted to have a commercial base where blacks would leave the united states because he, again, didn t believe that blacks and whites should assimilate, and he wanted blacks through his black star line to leave and go to africa. host: did garvey believe that we shouldn t or that we couldn t assimilate and that s the reason he wanted to go back to africa? guest: both. he thought not only should we not do it, but that whites would never give us an equal opportunity. and he used a very pejorative term towards duboise in the early part of the 1920s of calling him a white man s inward because, again, duboise then had been a founder of the niagara movement wh
