C.P.E. Bach: Württemberg Sonatas (6), Wq. 49 Keith Jarrett, piano ECM New Series 2790/91 (1994/2023). Manfred Eicher, prod.; Peter Laenger, eng. Performance Sonics Jazz pianist Keith Jarrett developed an interest in classical music midcareer, performing music by J.S. Bach and Shostakovichwhose linear styles he presumably found congenial. From the booklet: "I heard the Württemberg Sonatas recorded by harpsichordists, and I felt there was space for a piano version." He recorded them in 1994. This is their first release.
Shostakovich: Symphonies 6, 15 London Symphony Orchestra, Gianandrea Noseda, cond. LSO Live LSO0878 (CD). 2023. Nicholas Parker, prod.; Jonathan Stokes, Neil Hutchinson, engs. Performance ½ Sonics ½ These symphonies may seem strange bedfellows, but both scores alternate spacious, sustained writing with scurrying, supercilious passages. Unexpectedly, one CD accommodates both.
