In the dense forests of indonesia, a new species of great ape has been discovered by a team of international scientists. Its the tapanuli orang utan, and there are just 800 of them, which makes them the most endangered great ape in the world. Our science reporter victoria gill has the story. The remote mountain forests of sumatra are home to some of our closest ape relatives. And a small population here, first discovered just 20 years ago, has been hiding a scientific secret. This is the tapanuli orangutan, a species new to science. Until now, it was thought that there were just two distinct species of orangutan, sumatran and bornean, like this big male here.
