Fireworks. That’s the only word to describe the college wrestling matches from this past weekend. The Penn State Nittany Lions returned to the mat and looked as close to championship form as this team has looked all season, Michigan pulled out a narrow, rivalry win against the Buckeyes and Navy topped Army 20-13 in another historic dual.
Add the fact that one top-ranked wrestler was taken down by a conference opponent, another top-ranked wrestler made his season debut and a third top-ranked wrestler is out temporarily because of a COVID-19 shutdown, and the intrigue only increases.
(Laramie, WY) – For the first time this season, a Wyoming Cowboy has been named the Big 12’s Wrestler of the Week. It is the second career honor for Sophomore Stephen Buchanan, who is the first Cowboy to win the award since he won it last season.Â
Buchanan became the first Cowboy to defeat a No. 1 ranked opponent since Bryce Meredith in 2017. On Saturday, Buchanan knocked off No. 1 Noah Adams of West Virginia who was previously unbeaten on the season and on a 39-match winning streak.Â
The match started with Adams leading 2-1 after the first period. In the second Buchanan would roll through on Adams creating a frantic exchange in which he scored a reversal before letting Adams escape. Adams would lead Buchanan 5-4 heading into the third period. Â

Tom Mayhew is recording his show, Benefit Scum, next week. It’s an autobiographical half-hour about growing up working-class and his time on benefits.
The BBC says: ‘[It] takes a wry, sideways look at the prejudices that people have towards benefits claimants and turns those assumptions on their head.’
It has been adapted from his an audio adaptation of Mayhew s acclaimed 2019 Edinburgh show I, Tom Mayhew.
