The Co woman wants her clothes to speak for themselves, no adjusting or fussing required. For fall 2021, designers Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern imagined what she will want to wear when going, in an ideal world, back to the office or on a trip. That answer is encapsulated in the checked suit from the collection, which consists of an oversized jacket and pants with an elastic waistband. “We want our customers to go back out there feeling very strong,” Danan said. “The silhouettes are not fashion, they’re not avant-garde, but they’re strong.”
The duo were inspired by past vacations, particularly to Morocco, where Danan is from, and Japan. Clean lines and oversized silhouettes dominate the collection, accentuated by architectural flourishes like hoods (which drape gracefully over the shoulders when not worn), rows of buttons, and dolman sleeves. As Co’s designs have become more pared back, sculptural, and monastic, its business model too has shifted to focus on core items and customers. Earlier this year, Stephanie Danan and Justin Kern announced that the big seasons spring/summer and fall/winter would be for more fashion forward ready-to-wear, while pre-seasons would show off new additions to their essentials collection, the bread and butter of the brand.
The clean lines of their Richard Neutra–designed showroom seeped into the pre-fall collection, which was defined by one word: ease. “How can you make something look extremely designed and chic without having to think about it too much?” Danan asked. “When we give in to simplicity, it almost feels peaceful.” Certainly.
