Researching this column has revealed a number of things: that Wellingtonians have a “hole” lot of love for doughnuts (a single Facebook post unleashed the parochial passion we have nationwide for our favourite yeasty orbs of joy); that I have an insatiable sweet tooth and a prodigious appetite to satisfy said sweet tooth; and that my next column will probably be on salads, much to the relief of my doctor. Whether it is doughnuts or “donuts”, with a hole or without, Spanish churros dipped into hot chocolate, French beignets, or Greek loukoumades drizzled with honey, each essentially containing a wickedly delicious deep-fried mix of flour, sugar and yeast.
