With nearly a year of experience with the COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, it has been found that some post-COVID patients experience long-term lingering coughs, cognitive issues and other complains months after they recover from the virus. These long-haulers are also appear to be having the heart issues as well. Determining the long-term impact of coronavirus will certainly be one of the top cardiology issues discussed in 2021.

Oxford University scientists found that two to three months after the onset of coronavirus, 64 per cent of patients continued to experience breathlessness and 55 per cent reported fatigue. MRI scans revealed abnormalities in the lungs of 60 per cent of participants, in the hearts of 26 per cent, in the livers of 10 per cent and in the kidneys of 29 per cent of patients.

OVER the past year, scientists across the world have been racing to find a solution to the Covid-19 pandemic. Malaysian researchers too, are doing their part to help counter the spread of the coronavirus. In April, UK-based Malaysian surgeon Dr Nur Amalina Che Bakri was chosen to be part of the United Kingdom’s first Covid-19 vaccine trial team. Researchers from our local universities are also working on the development of a Covid-19 vaccine which is still in its early stages. In November, prominent Malaysian virologist Emeritus Prof Datuk Dr Lam Sai Kit joined The Lancet Covid-19 Commission probing the origin of the coronavirus.
