Former foreign minister Össur Skarphéðinsson this week submitted a report to the current Icelandic foreign minister, Guðlaugur Þór Þórðarson, titled “Cooperation between Iceland and Greenland in the New Arctic”. Össur was appointed by Guðlaugur to chair a committee charged with creating the document that contains a large number of proposals to strengthen and diversify relations between the two countries. Guðlaugur Þór told RÚV he believes people in both Iceland and Greenland have long been of the opinion that ties between the neighbours should be strengthened; adding that a lot of good developments have already taken place. He has felt the need, however, for a clearer plan for how to work on organising and strengthening the bilateral cooperation.
