things again a couple of years away from re-election. shepard: does he have concerns the people who live in knows states, like the ones everywhere else, may see higher costs on products if a trade war begins? that is one of the concerns that we re seeing from republicans. of course the republican party is largely free trade party, orthodoxy for years has been to push back on such steve tariffs that trump is advocating. in areas like wisconsin, we see harly davidson, paul ryan s home state, is based there. one of the resources that the european union is starting to impose tariffs on if trump goes through with these steel import tariffs. we will be impacted, and the republicans are giving a general consumer, to see higher prices. shepard: corporationles have a voice in this, often it goes through the speaker s office. are we hearing any echos of corporate america in there? yeah, we re definitely seeing some corporations come out, pushing back on this, of course,
yes, i think all of these concerns are overblown, like trade war and all the rest of it. but regardless, these tariffs are essential. so in anyway, stephen, could these tariffs help resuscitate the u.s., you know, steel industry, if that is a goal? maybe that s what you say, you know, the heart in the right place. yes. is that the intention? it is the intention. look, i agree with gordon is it possible? i want america to regain our industry might. i do want a vibrant steel industry. i want us to produce aluminum. i want us to produce cars. the manufacturing sector of the american economy is coming back big time. we ve created already a quarter million new manufacturing jobs since trump was president. so that s good. look, i think that american steel producers can compete on a level playing field. it s so interesting, i mean, ronald reagan put in steel import tariffs. so did bush. other parentresidents have. it s never really worked.
