Early Christmas present for Gresley steam locomotive engineers

Prince of Wales coupling rods ENGINEERS working on a new Gresley class p2 steam locomotive are delighted to have received an early Christmas present of a pair of machined coupling rods. The project to build locomotive No 2007 Prince of Wales, at Darlington Locomotive Works, has been ongoing for seven years with a fundraising target of £210,000 to pay for manufacture of the heavy motion. £175,000 plus Gift Aid has already pledged by 175 supporters. The Gresley class P2 2-8-2 ‘Mikados’ were the most powerful express passenger locomotives to operate in the UK. They were designed by Sir Nigel Gresley in the 1930s for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to haul 600 ton trains on the arduous Edinburgh to Aberdeen route. Sadly, the design was never fully developed and they were rebuilt by his successor Edward Thompson into ungainly class A2/2 4-6-2 ‘Pacifics’ in 1943/4, and were scrapped by 1961.
