I was incarcerated for around three months and I was in the program for about two-thirds of the time, Detunno said. I went there every week, on a Wednesday, for about an hour . they gave us something to do in stagnate time while you re incarcerated.
The main goal of the program is to provide a smooth transition period from being an inmate to a productive member of society with a job. The first 30 days after getting out of jail is critical and with 119 employers in Bay County who have partnered with AMIkids, the support is there.
Currently, the program is funded with federal money from the U.S. Department of Labor and it s for inmates between the ages of 18 and 24. Because only about 7% of the inmates who have gone through the program have ended up back in jail, AMIkids Executive Director Ron Boyce said he hopes the state also looks into helping fund the program.
