This subject, week after next, train and equip, not just iraq. Iraq, syria and afghanistan. Historically in a broader context, what are the lessons . Is it always hard . Are there particular circumstances in every country beyond our control . Are there lessons we can apply more broadly to Different Countries and our efforts to improve their Security Forces . We cant do everything ourselves. So nebraskas gsomebodys got t there helping us do it. Were trying to work with others. You just heard somebody today mention poland. We have allies of different capabilities. How well are we organized, equipped, prepared to work with those different capabilities . I think this is a big, very important question. So is the hearing going to be oversight or education . Both. So were going to have close the roundtable, were going to have outside experts, were going to have administration witnesses at different events. So its try to understand, but its also hone in on what were doing now and is it working
Particularly now as we see conditions growing as people survive heart problems and stroke problems, we see more people with alzheimers and cancer challenges, and we see the potential for designer medicine, largely because of the great work that was done to figure out how to define and understand the human genome system in a better way. This year this committee, the Sub Committee and the full committee placed a high priority on this research, and we have planned for and have a bill that includes 2 billion of extra money for that research, an increase of about 7 over current years spending, over the past decade, with not much new money going into nih, the purchasing power at nih has decreased by about 22 , and we hope to see that reverse if we are successful with what we are trying to do to provide the increase that we are looking at here. These are clearly difficult budgetary times and i am sure we could spend a lot of the time in the hearing talking about how there should be money for
The appropriations subcommittee on labor health and huge services and related agencies will come to order. I am certainly pleased we could have this opportunity this morning, dr. Collins, to talk to you and the other Institute Directors about the work youre doing and the work youd like to do. Certainly every family faces Health Concerns during their lifetime and there are so many things that can be done by nih that i think cant be done anywhere else. A new drug, a new device, new treatment can take anywhere from a decade to longer to develop, can cost billions of dollars on occasion with a pretty high failure rate even when you think youre on the right path. Certainly its necessary for the federal government to invest in Biomedical Research. It represents the hopes of lots of people and lots of families and particularly now as we see conditions growing as people survive heart problems and strock problems, we see more people with alzheimers and cancer challenges. We see the potential fo

Largest town in north was without a real station, which bring social and economic benefits to the town as weve already heard. As the Prime Minister is in a spending mood albeit a little bit further south, i wonder whether people help the people and give us an early Christmas Present with the promise of a rail station . Im very happy to look with honorable lady says. What were seeing is more Railway Lines open, more stations opening, and more railways electrify. I think the entire period of the last Labour Government electrified just 13 miles of track. And absolutely pathetic record for a government that had a 13 years to do something about it. We now have the biggest road Program Since the 1970s, the biggest rail investment Program Since the victorian, and actually under government stations, lines and electrification, thats all taking place. Will my friend made me to help get more pledge for the hospital quickly sent a minister to meet the magnificent the staff and possibly welsh patie
