Preseason All-American Andrew Abbott will get the ball for #5 Virginia in the Cavaliers’ season opener on Friday against UConn.
Abbott, a senior, is making the move from the bullpen, where he was dominant over the past three seasons – 165Ks in 128.1 IP, including 28 in 13.1 IP in 2020, in which he was 3-0 with a 1.35 ERA in nine appearances.

James Madison University has seven recent alumni who received Fulbright US Student Grants in 2020-2021, the third most of any master’s-level university in the country.
The list of top-producing institutions for the Fulbright program was published Monday, Feb. 15 in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program.

Tyler Smith received the Good Citizenship Youth Award Thursday from the Weyers Cave Ruritan Club.
This award is awarded to up to five youth annually in the Weyers Cave area who demonstrate selfless service in the community.
A senior at Fort Defiance, Smith volunteers regularly at the Verona Community Food Pantry. He helps wherever needed: emptying trash, lifting heavy materials, organize and stocking merchandise, and cleaning up.

Duke held Virginia scoreless in the final 3:09, got a go-ahead bucket from Jaemyn Brakefield with 1:59 to go, then held on for a 66-65 win Saturday night.
The Blue Devils (10-8, 8-6 ACC) got 22 points from sophomore Matthew Hurt, who was 8-of-13 from the field and 5-of-8 from three.
