STAUNTON In the basement of Shelburne Middle School, hidden away from the students, is the Staunton City Schools’ maintenance shop.
It’s a cramped space that was never meant to be a permanent home for the maintenance staff. In the early 1970s, it was actually an industrial arts classroom for the school.
Earl McCray is the director of operations, maintenance and transportation for the school division. He said the classroom was converted into the maintenance shop in 1974, at the time on a temporary basis. Forty-seven years later the shop is still housed in the school’s basement.
During a tour, McCray points to the carpentry shop where his staff does any wood work that may be needed. Not far away is a garage where staff performs maintenance on the division’s vehicles. If one of those tasks is being done, the other can’t. McCray can’t risk any dust getting in the engine.
