don t ask me. jon: bp engineers are hoping to begin sealing that blown-out well that s caused such misery in the gulf. they are still conducting tests trying to figure out whether underwater equipment can handle the i increase in pressure. we are getting reports bp is winding down cleanup operations despite evidence of fresh oil reaching sensitive wetlands. chris is live for us in louisiana. what is the latest on the effort to kill this well. reporter: we learned overnight that bp actually managed to seal several hydraulic lee in the procedure called the static kill. it has not started yet. right now we are told by admiral thad allen the incident commander that they are actually doing some testing to clear the flow path to make sure that is clear, to establish a pump rate and monitoring pressure levels. they ll do those tests for about two hours this morning and monitor the results of the test
a test that was a precursor to the so-called static kill procedure. but bp releasing a statement tonight saying that as engineers prepare to start the injectivety test they discovered what bp is calling a small hydraulic leak in the capping system s hydraulic control system. bp says the test and the static kill will wait until the leak is fixed. possibly by tomorrow. but even before bp s engineers have tried, merely tried to pump mud and cement down the throat of the busted well, something it has tried and failed to do in similar fashion before, something it cannot now even start, the company is acting as if it has already succeeded. bp officials today saying they are not sure they will even use the relief wells that they have been digging for months now to permanently plug the ruptured oil well in the gulf of mexico, what was long thought to be the best, most surefire method of stopping the leak for good. a bp spokesman saying, precisely what the relief wells will do remains to be se
and the thought of them walking this forest and hopefully them bringing their grandchildren here to walk around, that s a pretty neat thing to consider. reporter: and consider it, he does, seated at his piano made of wood in a recording studio surrounded by trees. to see the sun coming up over here and over the pines, as you say, it can be very inspirational to play. reporter: well, play a little more. someone we can lean on reporter: an expert on trees and stones. baby you can lean on me test it, plug it, kill it, that is still the plan for the bp well, now blamed for the worst accidental oil spill ever. almost 5 million barrels, we re told. one last test planned before the so-called static kill begins to
end of the leak, anything special about how he s getting updated? i know secretary chu and others are down in houston today. i think he will likely touch base with them at some point. i don t have the schedule in front of me. but likely at some point today speak with secretary chu and others that are in houston and are monitoring the activities. i think it is important to note the stack particular kill static kill, injecting the mud into the top of the well is certainly one part of the long-term effort to finally kill the well. that will be followed by activities at the bottom part of the well, and then ultimately as we ve talked about the permanent solution is still the relief well that is on going. you won t declaring victory on this until you get the relief well done.
in the spring. the manufacturing sector grew for the 15th straight month, but at the slowest of the year. construction spending was up .1 percent, the increase from the government work. the dow had a big day today gaining 208 after good news in the economic earnings reports particularly good news from china and europe. and the s&p was up 24.25 and the nasdaq was up 40. b.p. says it will start shoving mud and cement into the well at the bottom of the gulf of mexico tuesday. our corporate is like in louisiana to tell us of the procedure called static kill. the goal is to pump the heavy drilling mud at a rate strong enough to overcome the pressure of the oil and b.p. could use the same system of pipes to shoot cement down into the well and finally seal this for good. if it doesn t work the relief
