Transcripts For CSPAN QA Harold Holzer The Presidents Vs. The Press - Part Two 20240712

Susan Harold Holzers is our second hour about your new book the president s versus press. Susan from the time you started this project, was it always it versus the press . Mr. Holzer im glad you asked. No. Originally it was the president s and the press. In my research about president kennedy, i found that he gave a very defensive speech in 1961 for the American Publishers Association in new york city. And during the speech he said, i wanted to call this speech the president versus the press because you are not always living up to your responsibility to protect the american interest. And i have to be talked down so i could call up the president. So i will call it the president s and the press. But i like the first version better, he put it all out on the says ourkennedy interest and theirs are. Ncompatible sto susan is that why he also earned the photo on your cover . Mr. Holzer well, i went back and forth on that and did my andul editor in team team. There is a great shot of Lyndon Jo

Mr. Chairman. My fellow americans. My fellow democrats, i proudly accept the nomination of our party. [cheers and applause] this moment, this moment is one of personal pride and gratification, yet one cannot help but reflect the deep sadness we feel over the troubles and the violence which have erupted, regrettably and tragically, in the streets of this great city and for the personal injuries which have occurred. [applause] that is neubert humphrey accepting the democratic nomination for president at chicagos Conrad Hilton hotel, or democrats have gathered for their convention in the midst of the vietnam war while thousands of protesters demonstrated outside. Hubert humphrey, longtime senator and unsuccessful candidate for president , is the focus of this weeks contenders program. We are live from minnesotas history center. The documentarian of Hubert Humphreys life just finished the documentary last year. We are standing in the center of an exhibit about 1968. To start our discussion

Debates backtoschool, voters are not allowed to see or hear him say those words. Almost immune. We have a lot more on this, believe me. Lets get straight to your money. An economic indicator, here it is, 1. 19 million new jobless claims. That is the lowest number since the economy tanked. It is very good news for the recovery. The trend in new claims is flat out down. The dow industrials taking a little heart from that. We were lower, now were going to be up maybe 30 odd points. Not much of a gain. Theres a lot of green on the lefthand side of the screen. The market story is the march to new highs. The techheavy nasdaq already hit several records this week. The dow is at the 27,000 level. Thats up 8,000 points in four months. Theres a lot of very positive news in the background. Positive vaccine news. That helped. Dr. Fauci says well have tens of millions of doses of the vaccine available early next year. Heres another plus. If congress doesnt come up with a virus relief package, the p

Provider. Intelligence and state Department Officials from three administrations now on u. S. Policy toward china and russia amid the coronavirus pandemic. The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is the host of this discussion. Welcome to todays program, u. S. China and russian china pandemic. In the 1951 scifi classic, the day the earth stood still, a planets is visited by an alien spacecraft bearing a giant robot and an emissary with a very sobering message, mend your differences or face obliteration. The movie concludes with World Leaders pottering their choice. It would be wonderful to believe whether in the form of a Global Pandemic or a threat to modern space that in fact the world would mend its differences but by the looks of things the rivalries and disputes have only grown, certainly magnified in the time of the pandemic and are likely to continue. They are accelerating preexisting patterns of tension and competition. Nowhere it seems is or are there tensions more evid

By emma lazarus that says give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free as the embodiment of the way we think about this country and immigration. As you look across the history of this nation, does it track with the reality of how we have treated immigrants . Dr. Kraut the history of immigration in the u. S. Doesnt track at all with emma lazaruss wonderful quotation. It has been a lovehate relationship. In the 19th century, there was a popular immigrant saying, america beckons but americans repel. In many ways that much more how ourly embodies relationship with immigration has been in the United States. One of the great ironies is that emma lazarus wrote the poem in 1883, and one year before, in 1882, the u. S. Passed the chinese exclusion law, excluding chinese laborers from coming to the United States. We would pass in the years after that increasingly restrictive legislation. So we want immigrants to come. We beckon them with opportunity. We beckon them
