A statement signed by the union’s Assistant General Secretary, Moni Mike Modesty Itua, said the directive would remain in force until the union directed otherwise.
According to him, the decision of public schools not to enrol into the contributory pension scheme was as a result of the resolution of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the union at its last meeting held on December 29, 2020.
The union had on December 29 issued a 21-day strike notice to the state government over alleged failure to meet its demands bothering on poor conditions of service and non-payment of outstanding financial entitlements among others.

The simmering crisis between the Edo State branch of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and the State government bordering on their welfare has taken a new twist as the leadership of the teacher’s union has directed its members to shun enrollment into the state government’s contributory pension scheme.
The directive is coming ahead of the scheduled January 18, 2021, resumption date by all public and private primary and post-primary institutions in the State for a second term for the 2021 Academic Session.
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Edo State on Sunday directed its members not to enroll in the state government’s contributory pension scheme.
The Assistant General Secretary of NUT in the state, Moni Modesty, who made the call in a statement titled: “Forceful enrollment into contributory pension scheme,” said the directive to the teachers stand until the union decides to change its position on the matter.
He added that the decision was a follow-up to the resolution of the NUT Executive Council at its last meeting held on December 29, 2020.
Modesty said: “As a follow-up to the resolutions of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the union at its last meeting held on December 29, 2020; especially on the issue of Contributory Pension Scheme for primary school teachers in Edo State, I have been directed to inform all SWEC members, school heads and primary schools teachers in the state not to fill any document having to do with the contributory pension scheme.

Edo school teachers issue 21-day strike ultimatum

The Edo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers on Wednesday issued a 21-day ultimatum to the state government to pay its members’ outstanding entitlements.
This was contained in a communique issued after the meeting of the State Wing Executive Council on Wednesday. The statement was signed by Pius Okhueliegbe, Chairman, Moni Mike Itua, Assistant Secretary General and three other officers of the body.
According the communique, the State Wing Executive Council deliberated on issues of education, teachers welfare, conditions of service, among other and found the government wanting .
