WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - The N.C. Department of Environmental Quality has approved the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority’s application for a $4.59 million low-interest loan for two major projects.
“The State Water Infrastructure Authority announced this month that CFPUA’s application, submitted in September 2020, was approved to receive loan funding through the Clean Water State Revolving Fund,” CFPUA said in a news release. “These loans are a key part of securing funding for CFPUA’s Capital Improvement Plan, which prioritizes replacement and rehabilitation of aging infrastructure.”

State government will give Kingstown a helping hand to deal with its struggling sewer system.
The Local Government Commission approved a $250,000 grant to Kingstown on Tuesday. The grant, also approved by the State Water Infrastructure Authority, aims to help the town find solutions related to issues with its sewer system.
The Local Government Commission considers Kingstown s sewer system as a distressed unit. More than 100 municipalities in the state also have systems fitting that category, meaning their utility systems are aging, underfunded or have some other major issue.
The Local Government Commission and Cleveland County Water has offered to take ownership of Kingstown’s sewer collection service but no agreement has been reached yet. Kingstown owns its sewer system, but the city of Shelby maintains it for a fee.
