Billions in profit for Dutch fossil fuel firm NAM due to higher natural gas price

The Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij (NAM) made billions of euros in profits last year, mainly as a result of the higher natural gas price. An earlier reorganization at the company, which Shell and ExxonMobil own in a 50-50 joint venture, also boosted the company's results. NAM achieved a net profit of 2.4 billion euros, compared to 385 million euros in 2021, according to the annual report. The company called it an exceptional year, due to the increased gas prices.

Netherlands to stop extracting gas from Groningen on October 1, except for emergencies

The extraction of natural gas in Groningen will be halted on October 1 after 60 years in operation, State Secretary Hans Vijlbrief said in a statement on Friday. The gas field was discovered in the late 1950s, and covers a large portion of the Groningen province, even extending under the Eems River, the Dollard Bay, and the Wadden Sea.

Half of Groningen gas field to close permanently starting this weekend

Six of the 11 remaining Groningen production sites for the extraction of natural gas will close on Saturday. Production at the remaining five locations will be kept to a trickle so that they can be used immediately to extract additional gas in case of emergency, reported State Secretary Hans Vijlbrief on Friday.
