Officials at Cal State San Marcos plan to add the name of their recently retired president to a university institute that is already named after the well-known philanthropist Darlene Shiley and some students are less than pleased.
The name change, which is expected to take effect later this year, was actually agreed to two years ago, when Shiley and the university first reached an agreement to name the CSU Shiley Institute for Palliative Care in the donor’s honor, officials said.
“At the time, it was the wish of Mrs. Shiley to also acknowledge Karen Haynes in the naming following the requisite two-year period post-retirement for an individual who has served the CSU in an administrative capacity,” spokeswoman Margaret Chantung said in an email.

SAN MARCOS, CA With universities reopening for on-campus learning as more people in the United States get vaccinated against COVID-19, students may be wondering how safe their college might be as they return to the classroom.
A report from Your Local Security, a security systems retailer, aims to shed some light on that issue and ranked the safest colleges in America. Using pre-pandemic crime data from the Federal Bureau of Investigations and information from the U.S. Department of Education, the company found that California State University San Marcos and the University of California, Irvine, were the safest campuses in California.

When students return to campuses in coming months, they’ll be carrying their backpacks, notebooks, and a host of shortfalls and deficits accrued over a year’s worth of remote learning.
Some will come back with losses in reading, math or other subjects that they couldn’t master over Zoom classes. Others will show up nervous about meeting classmates they haven’t seen this year, and teachers they know only from screens. Kindergarteners may have missed the building blocks of early literacy, and basic steps in social development. High school seniors, meanwhile, will transition to young adulthood, jobs and college without most of the milestones the senior year usually promises.
