COLUMBUS Ohio House Democratic lawmakers on Monday introduce a series of gun safety laws that they referred to as “commonsense” during a press conference. Saying mass shootings in Ohio and across the country have not declined since the Oregon District massacre in 2019, the proposed laws will ensure the promise of safety and security for all Ohioans, said Minority Leader Emilia Strong Sykes, D-Akron. Democrats must step up now because Gov. Mike DeWine and other Republicans have failed to pass meaningful laws to end gun violence, she said.

Ohio should be testing gas quality, local legislator says Eileen McClory © Bill Lackey Gas prices in the Springfield area are on the rise again. BILL LACKEY/STAFF A local state representative wants Ohio to join other states that test the quality of gasoline sold at filling stations. Ohio, Alaska and Nebraska are the only three U.S. states without such a program. County auditors are required to inspect pumps currently, but are not allowed to test the quality of the gasoline. Local state Rep. Willis Blackshear Jr., D-Dayton, announced Friday he will co-sponsor House Bill 144, which would allow county auditors to authorize fuel quality testing programs in their home counties.
