target gun offenders. and president trump said, listen, this is him delivering on a campaign promise. he did say he would send in federal help to the city of chicago. cnn national correspondent ryan young joining us live from that city. ryan, what are you hearing there this morning? look, this is a big conversation that s been had. since the last administration, when you talk to the police department, they said they don t care what administration gives them the help, they do want some help. there is good news here in chicago. crime is down 14%. of course, the police department do not want to go too far and celebrate that yet because they realize they ve got to make movements in terms of communities. the atf strike force has 20 members that are going to be joining state patrol officers and police officers. they re going to work in a secret location and go safer illegal guns. of course, if you think about this, l.a. and new york combined don t collect as many guns as chicago does. they
it s worse than some of the places that we read about in the middle east where you have wars going on. it s so sad. chicago has become so sad a situation. trump tweeted friday, quote, crime and killings in chicago have reached epidemic proportions a i am sending in federal help. he s talking about the new task force between the chicago police department and federal agents. cnn s ryan young. julie:ing us live from chicago. ryan, what more can you tell us about this commitment? fred, this has been a big conversation for quite some time. you think about last year, over 700 people being killed in the city, more than 4,300 shot. when you talk to people at the police department, they say they ve started making overtures to the last administration to have this task force come now. of course it s happening under jeff sessions and donald trump. we do know 20 members of this elite task force will be in this area joining with police officers and state patrol officers as they hit the streets
illegal immigrant who s creating a violent climate or a danger to our community, we re the first to say, we will be partners. we will make sure that person is arrested and make sure they get referred to i.c.e. and they get deported. going around and randomly picking up undocumented individuals, taking law enforcement officers off what they re supposed to be doing, that s not as warmly received. as you know, the white house wants local law enforcement, which includes color state patrol, which you just mentioned, and the are under your control, to aid i.c.e. in this immigration enforcement. can you clarify for me, do you want the cps, the kol state patrol, to go along with the white house order or do you want them to ignore it? well, we ve gone along with the i mean, for the last three months weave been trying to find the funding to adds 30 additional state patrol officers. we don t have any extra staff to put on this. so, they have to come off of some other, you know, priority

we have seen significant progress in that regard, and i want to say at this point, a thank you to the teachers, to the staffs, to the resource officers for those schools, the administrators, many of them were there with the children all night, and they have taken care of those children and made sure if they were staying in their school, that they were safe. they ve also been aided by the state patrol, we sent state patrol officers to all of the schools where children were being kept, and they have worked with the local resource officers of those schools, because we were concerned primarily of their safety and of their well being, and i think everyone can report to you as you talk to those schools individually that there s been tremendous cooperation from the state level, from the city level, and certainly from the school and district level. now, that has been our priority.
