the country. yes, the majority vote democrat. but in 2020, there was an enormous shift to the republican party. the future of our democracy in the ballots, i wanted to find out what s fueling that rightward shift in latino communities across the. country so we ll have a conversation about all these things straight ahead. but first, this field report from florida. thank you. as you can imagine, politics is a total blood sport. the reason i m a republican is those are my values. i think that s resonating with others experiences as well. how many of you voted for trump in 2020? i m scared to say that i voted for trump. but i also voted for obama. the biggest misconception is that latinos are supposed to be democrats. we just won the capital. my first language is spanish. i m definitely not a white supremacist. i had a right to be there and protest. [speaking spanish] he s the best damn president in u.s. history. to believe that the 20 traction election was stolen? i believe president trump won that election and voter fraud occurred. for me, 2020 was the political awakening. your children are not safe in the school system. excuse me, ma am. i don t have anything against the lgbtq community at all. i don t think the kid should have it pushed on them. all right, lately, that was so good. [speaking spanish] it s always socialism, socialism, shalom.
i was asking for violence against congress, or uprising against congress, or violence against biden, or anything like that. and i ve heard worse. not from us, i hear towards the cause, you guys are pigs. you will need to die. you traitor. you yourself said you traders. yeah, i did say that. why did you say that? because i felt at the time, they were letting us hear our voices. that s why i felt betrayal. many people arrested at the capitol, including gabrielle, have been connected to the proud boys, a far-right organization that describe themselves as weston chauvinists. are you a proud boy? not anymore, i used to be. people bring that up, right, because when you associate the term hispanic or latino with proud boys?

that a much more favorable combination for the republican candidate. one of the things, carlos, that stuck with me a lot is that we did just see a rightward shift in florida. we saw a radical rightward shift in florida among many characters we met. do you believe that this extremism is starting to become the norm among new republican latino voters? i think a lot of latinos culturally are starting to worry about the perceived as the rapid change in the country, the way the country s opening up, perhaps being more accepting, i think that s how a lot of people would characterize it. but latinos, especially those that came to the country a couple decades ago with an idea of what the united states law was, they are identifying with us trumpian message of white america make america great again. it s ironic because you would think that would immediately appeal to new americans. but in a way, it does. they fear that the democratic party is moving too fast and they re being left behind. t
