Abia Government has imposed an indefinite curfew on Umuahia and Aba metropolis, beginning from 10 pm to 6 am with effect from Monday, April 5.
The announcement is contained in a statement issued in Umuahia on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information, Chief John Kalu.
Kalu stated that “the directive was necessitated by the security reports received from multiple sources and the need to continue to protect innocent citizens and residents of Abia”.
The statement urged security agencies in the state to ensure strict enforcement and compliance with the directive by residents of the two cities.

The Governor of Abia State, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has directed the imposition of curfew in Aba and Umuahia metropolis between 10pm and 6am daily from today, Monday, 5th April, 2021 till further notice.
This is sequel to security reports received from multiple sources, and informed by the need to continue to protect innocent citizens and residents of the state.

Vanguard explained that security agencies in the state have been directed to ensure strict enforcement and compliance with the directive. Only those on essential services with proper identification are exempted from the curfew.

Following the attacks by gunmen on the Imo State Police Command headquarters and the Owerri Correctional Prison, the Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu, has imposed a curfew on Aba and Umuahia communities.
The curfew becomes effective immediately between 10pm and 6am daily “till further notice”, Abia State Commissioner for Information, John Kalu, said in a statement.
Abia is bordered by Imo to the West.
The PUNCH had reported that scores of vehicles were razed around 1am on Monday when gunmen attacked Owerri and freed at least 1,500 inmates.
The hoodlums also freed the suspects in almost all the cells at the State Criminal Investigation Department of the command.

The Abia State Government on Monday imposed a curfew in the state capital, Umuahia, and the state’s commercial city of Aba, hours after hoodlums suspected to be members of the pro-Biafra group, IPOB, and its security arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) launched daring attacks on police and correctional service headquarters in the neighbouring Imo State.
Abia and Imo States are in Nigeria’s South-east region.
The South-east and South-south regions have witnessed a spate of deadly and worrisome attacks on police officers and police facilities of late.
