A large crowd of residents gathered in the Chickie’s & Pete’s parking lot on April 5 to speak out against a proposal that would bring a Parx Casino sports book inside the popular restaurant.
More than 100 residents mostly from the Packer Park neighborhood held signs and spoke in strong opposition of having gambling more prominent in their neighborhood.
“I wanted people to know what was going on,” said Barbara Capozzi, president of the Packer Park Neighborhood Association. “The legal process alone is probably not going to stop Pete (Ciarrocchi). It’s Parx (Casino), too. They’re a great organization but it’s all about money to them. This is our neighborhood, and there is no neighborhood in this city that fights harder for ourselves.”

Bill to expand casinos at racetracks stalls in New Mexico Legislature
Walter Rubel
LAS CRUCES - A bill seeking to bolster the Lottery Scholarship Fund by allowing sports betting and table games at the state’s horse racing tracks was likely doomed the evening before The Feb. 8 meeting of the House Education Committee.
In the fiscal impact report on House Bill 101 delivered to legislators Sunday evening, officials from both the state Attorney General’s office and the State Gaming Commission said the proposed expansion would be a violation of the state’s gaming compacts governing tribal casinos, and would result in the forfeiture of its share of the revenue.

The State Gaming Commission has approved a new app that ll make it easier for people to play some of their favorite lottery games.
A company named Jackpocket developed a program allowing folks to buy scratch-off tickets and have them delivered right to their homes. Once the scratch-off version of the app goes live, players can buy bundles of tickets at a time. Money for those purchases will come from a deposit system set up by the company.
