FARIBAULT COUNTY, Minn. (KEYC) Gov. Tim Walz authorized emergency assistance for Faribault County Thursday for damage sustained from a severe winter storm during Dec. 23-24.
Due to the snow, ice and high winds, several jurisdictions lost electricity due to downed power poles and lines.
Faribault County’s electrical infrastructure sustained significant damage.
The State Disaster Assistance Contingency Account will cover 75% of eligible costs, which is approximately $358,000. Faribault County will be responsible for the remaining 25%, or approximately $119,000.

“As Minnesotans, it’s our duty to help out our neighbors when unexpected challenges arise,” said Governor Walz. “Our local governments are important partners in everything we do. That’s why we’re authorizing state disaster assistance in Faribault County to aid in their recovery from this storm.”
Beginning on December 23, 2020, a severe winter storm swept across Minnesota producing a combination of blowing snow and high winds causing whiteouts, dangerous driving conditions, road closures, vehicle accidents, and stranded motorists. Due to the ice, snow, and high winds, several jurisdictions lost electricity due to downed power poles and lines. Faribault County’s electrical infrastructure experienced significant damage.
Gov. Tim Walz on Monday, Dec. 7, authorized state disaster assistance for Sibley County and seven other counties that were impacted by severe storms this summer.
âItâs our responsibility to help our neighbors recover in the face of devastating weather events,â Walz said. âThese storms were so severe that our communities continue to struggle with damage to their infrastructure and local economy. Thatâs why weâre authorizing funds from our stateâs disaster assistance account to aid in recovery efforts.â
Sibley, Renville, and Nicollet counties experienced flooding caused by a heavy rainfall from a series of thunderstorms that occurred from July 25-27. The heavy rains resulted in flooding and washouts to county and township roads and inundated county ditch systems across the region.
